The Broken Hill Art Exchange operates an International Artist Residency that so far has hosted visiting artists from the UK, Japan, Belgium, Jamaica, Switzerland, the US and Ireland. When the Art Exchange was founded in 2001 residential artists stayed in the homes of volunteers. Today it offers a combination of studio spaces and accommodation at the South Side Art Centre, on Duff Street Park in Broken Hill.
Works produced and/or researched by artists while in residence at the Broken Hill Art Exchange have been exhibited in many leading international art events such as the Venice Biennale, the Biennale of Sydney, Bondi Sculptures by the Sea and the Tate Modern, London. Artists work in all media and genres including film & video, music & sound production, painting & drawing, sculpture and environmental art.
The Broken Hill Art Exchange consists of 8 studios, some with permanent artists in residence. The facilities include live-in studios that are fully self-contained. All studios are converted shop spaces, providing a warehouse style feel, with large open areas. There is ample work space as well as comfortable, well-appointed living quarters with WiFi access. A meeting/conference room can be made available, as well as a large workshop space if artists wish to conduct community workshops or have an exhibition. This vibrant art complex offers many opportunities for collaboration and inspiration, while also maintaining a quiet and productive work space when required. A management office on site during business hours.
